Please God, American fanfic writers, if you're trying to sound British, write "Mummy," not "Mommy." It's just... jarring.

Hayayayaya! [May. 2nd, 2006|08:52 pm]
[mood | cheerful]
[music |Blondie - War Child]

You know, it's strange. When I was 8 or 9 or so, I was addicted to Xena: Warrior Princess. It ended up being family tradition that, on the nights it aired, we'd watch it together while eating dinner. To me, it was the pinnacle of television. I adored it.

I was looking through the programme guide yesterday and saw that it was on. Well, as a group we flicked to that channel to relive old memories. Oh, man, what a shock. It's terrible. Adorably terrible, but still tacky and hilariously weird. We saw one where Xena, by implication, inspired Hippocrates to become the father of medicine. The entire episode consisted of the busty leather-clad warrior princess and her blonde cutie Gabrielle kicking the entirely useless doctors away and tending to their patients themselves. We even got a tracheotomy with a hollow reed and someone toting a caduceus.

What surprised me the most was the bloodshed - it was incredible. One of the first things we saw was Xena slash some random soldier's neck open with her chakram and then stab them through the chest with a sword. As we entered the temple/hospital, it only got worse: arrows through necks, gashes, gaping wounds and whatnot. I was brought up with this stuff. Can you imagine that?

It kind of damaged the fond memories I had of the show, but at the same time, it was oddly brilliant viewing.

I want to watch more.

By the way, it's been so long since I saw it, I have virtually no memory of the major plot arcs. Please don't spoil me!

Lear [May. 1st, 2006|04:41 pm]
[mood | calm]
[music |Nick Cave - Let the Bells Ring]

We got nominated to be entered into the Globe Shakespeare competition, but one or two people in our group are really opposed to it.
Which is kind of good, since that means I'll probably get to replace the Duke of Cornwall and be all violent and menacing and rwaarrrrgh.
Now we just need to convince the Earl of Gloucester.

Victory is mine! [Apr. 11th, 2006|07:00 am]
[mood | tired]
[music |Radiohead - Sulk]

My house won athletics yesterday!
I deserve to take no credit for it, since all the hard work was done by the two poor reps we elected. All I really did was run around, take photos, get horribly sunburned and carry the cup.
Still, winning is awfully nice.

Bad news, good news [Apr. 4th, 2006|07:22 am]
[mood | busy]
[music |Snow Patrol - Run]

Bad news is I won't get to go to Shakespeare Day, so no Fool, no rope tricks, no awesome makeup.
Good news is instead I'm going to the Premier's Award ceremony, as I won one for biology.

I'm determined to schmooze and make the most of it.

I fell out of favour with the gods of leave-it-well-enough-alone today while I was painting something to go in my art book. I was taking photos along the way, and I have a beautiful image of the pear I was working on, just the way I wanted it.
Unfortuately, perfectionism got the best of me and I just continued hacking away at it until it was entirely ruined.

Argh.

The replacement I did later wasn't nearly as nice.

Howl's [Apr. 2nd, 2006|09:09 pm]

[music |The hum of my PC]

Surprisingly, it was only today that I watched the dubbed version of Howl's Moving Castle, even though it was provided on the R2 DVD I've had for some four months. I expected it to be bad, or at least annoying. I was stunned. It's absolutely brilliant!
Hearing Christian Bale, who was so sexily husky-voiced for most of it, cry and screech about the state of his hair is just hilarious. Seriously, watch the dub just for that. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK!
Also, watch it for the Crystal's Calcifer.
And Sophie.

A rant on the idiocy of others [Mar. 29th, 2006|08:04 pm]
[mood | aggravated]
[music |Thea Gilmore - Apparition 13]

I had everything set up for my English oral SAC at lunchtime today so that I might begin it smoothly from the moment the class started. Nice and prepared, tidied room, not too nervous, already resting on the first slide.
And what happened then... )

[mood | listless]
[music |Mai Otome - Chiisaki Doukeshi]

One of my school's English teachers brought the second Mai Otome soundtrack back from Japan for me last week. Isn't that brilliant? Apparently her wild nephew enjoyed the challenge of finding a copy.

Merciful [Mar. 23rd, 2006|04:38 pm]
[music |Hoshi ga Kanaderu Monogatari]

Why is Miyu wearing part of Akane's school uniform? Well, it's missing one mark on the back, but other than that it's exactly the same.

I have this nagging urge to make that apron-style section and wear it over my own uniform one day. It can't actually be that hard. Of course, I'll never actually get around to doing it, but the thought is there.

My U2 tickets [Mar. 11th, 2006|03:43 pm]
[mood | Blah]

Last December I waited for hours in the sun and forked out two hundred dollars for two tickets to the Melbourne U2 concert, and what do you know, they've gone and "postponed it indefinitely" only a fortnight before they were supposed to come. It seems like two is not my lucky number.

It's just a nicer way of saying "cancelled."

I feel sorry for The Edge's daughter, but goddamn.

To add to that rant, it's the first day of the holidays and I've caught a nasty cold. Bah!

I was cast as the Fool for Shakespeare Day and I want to learn how to cartwheel. Also possibly walking on my hands. Wonder if it's hard to learn.
What an awesome role.

Wishbone & Joe [Mar. 7th, 2006|09:29 pm]
Does anybody remember watching Wishbone as kids? The show with the Jack Russell terrier who used to go into classic novels and be dressed up in clothes and little hats. I always loved Wishbone.

If you never watched it, look here.

Tomorrow I'm attending some kind of free "VCE success" lecture, the flyer for which had a photograph of me on it. I wonder if anyone will recognise me. Probably not, but you never know.
If it's the same kind of crap I hear over and over, I'll just leave during the break. You can't beat free!
I'm really only going for the also-free maths lecture, which could be handy for Tuesday's SAC.

Today's SAC [Mar. 1st, 2006|10:20 pm]
[mood | Blank]
[music |U2 - Until the End of the World]

Japanese orals terrify me. I spent the whole of recess pacing in front of the classroom, muttering sentences to myself and trying not to look too mad.

It wasn't actually too bad in the end, and felt far faster than the five minutes we apparently conversed for, but I'm still fretting about what mark she'll give me.

I want to make a The Wall marching hammers armband, but I'm not sure how I'd get the design onto it. Iron onto a white circle sewn onto the black band, perhaps.
Or I could just, y'know, buy a patch.

Tantastic [Feb. 26th, 2006|11:04 am]
[mood | Chipper]
[music |Radiohead - My Iron Lung]

I think I've managed to get the slightest, lightest tan ever on my arms. This is a great achievement. I usually go straight to "stroke."
Work must continue on this.

I'm going out today to get a canvas for a painting my brother wanted. Bright coloured, swirly with bubbly text, with blood dripping down the sides and the Grady twins from The Shining. I've made them kind of long and skinny with almost blank faces. "Come and play with us, Danny."
My brother's name is Daniel :D
He said nothing girly, so I'm not quite sure how he'll react to this.
